Κρήτη - (Experimental Film, 2026)

Crete was the center of Europe's first advanced civilization, the Minoans, from 2700 to 1420 BC and has been the home of many subsequent civilizations including the Romans, Byzentines, Ottomans and Greeks. The video Κρήτη is an ongoing video work and the result of an ongoing collaboration between the artist and scientific researchers studying the unique ecosystem of Crete for clues into how ancient civilizations adapted to dramatic climate events over decades and centuries. This includes collecting soil, water, cave drip and stalagmite samples, and monitoring temperature and humidity alongside other data analysis providing clues hidden and encoded within the landscape.

The work is also a question of interdisciplinary practice, and how artists and scientists can work more closely for a more experiential understanding of climate and human adaptation in new ways. The video Κρήτη is meant to inspire questioning and curiosity from viewers, as it experiments with the format and presentation of moving images and sound, combining audio-visual “data” in unconventional ways and creating new connections between the landscape, notions of “deep time” and how we perceive the world around us. Subterranea uses photography to capture the exceptional cave interiors which shift dramatically from the light cast from the scientists’ headlamps, often creating mysterious forms and compositions.
