Today we went to the pothole at Psitraki. It was an amazing drive through Cretan mountains and on switchback roads that folded back and forth as we gained height.

We parked at the top and were met by Panagiotis a local caver and archaeologist who descended the cave with Chloe and James. We had a walk through apple orchards and over the fossil filled limestone mountains, through Cretan sage, Greek spiny spurge and other spikey plants of Crete. We passed through a sink hole and down a steep bank to the pick-up truck that had struggled to pass over the ditches in the track, that had been eroded by the heavy rainfall, storms, and floods a few weeks ago. From there a short climb to meet Chloe at the pothole the way marked with an arrow of stones and a cairn. Chloe had set the ropes for three pitches down 200m to a lake and caves at the bottom.

The fossils and plants switched back and forth.
