EASE Labs and Updates

At the heart of EASE is a series of Artist Venturing Labs: week-long gatherings in the landscapes of Crete where artists and scientists work side by side. Each lab puts our Climactic Assemblages Methodology (CAM) into practice. CAM is built on immersion and on interaction across disciplines.

Each lab has its own theme, location, and mix of people, so each takes a different path. All of them share one purpose: to spark new ideas for communicating climate science, and to develop the strongest of those ideas into prototypes.

We'll map each lab's journey here as it unfolds. Follow along and explore the connections being made.

1

Entanglements

The first lab takes the Psiloritis massif as a single living system. Climate, water, stone, myth and livelihood are inseparable here.

2

Materiality

Margarites has made pottery for centuries, which makes it a natural home for a lab about matter as a record of time.

3

Sound and Sonic Environments

Caves are acoustic instruments. Every drip falling onto a growing stalagmite is both a sound and a data point.

4

Temporal Mapping

At Phalasarna, the ancient harbour now sits stranded above the sea, lifted out of the water by the great earthquake of AD 365.

5

Immersive Environments

The final Crete lab moves into the gorges and caves of Sfakia, one of Crete's most rugged and remote regions.

6

Rivers and Their Communities

This theme offers a strong bridge to UK replication, where rivers are at the centre of public debate about water quality and climate resilience.
