Sound and Sonic Environments

Caves are acoustic instruments. Every drip falling onto a growing stalagmite is both a sound and a data point, and the monitoring equipment in the Vreiko and Apoloustres caves records those rhythms as climate signals. This winter lab invites musicians, sound artists and acoustic researchers to listen to the landscape of eastern Crete. Its subjects include cave drip water, the sea eroding the Minoan town of Palaikastro, the Minoan dam at Choiromandres, and the wind on the Petsophas peak sanctuary. Coastal archaeology here is increasingly a race against rising seas, which gives the lab an urgent counterpoint. Participants explore sonification, field recording and live composition as ways to make environmental change heard and felt.
