Rottnest is an experimental documentary film that follows a team of scientists led by Dr. Andy Baker (UNSW) as they conduct groundwater research within Rottnest Island, a 19-square-kilometre island off the coast of Western Australia.
The island provides an ideal landscape to observe the intrusion of saltwater into coastal groundwater systems as the region experiences increasing drought due to climate change. Despite being invisible to the eye and only observable via careful scientific analysis, the changes to the landscape are profound, yet ironically opposed to the muted way scientists conduct their research. Rottnest, with its intense score and cinematic approach, explores the quiet yet relevant drama unfolding within the landscape.
